***URGENT*** Calling kitten Fosters: "Kitten Season" is here! We need you NOW! The kittens and the shelter need you. As a foster home, you can choose to foster kittens that need to be bottle fed, a nursing Mom cat and her babies, or a little older weaned kittens that just need to grow up/gain enough weight so they can be spayed/neutered and be adopted or maybe just un-socialized kittens that have not had any or minimal human contact - they just need some TLC so they can be adopted - nothing better than cuddling a kitten. And the best reason for being a cat/kitten foster is that even if it's pouring rain, you don't have to walk them! Please call the shelter for additional information.

The Shelter is filled to near maximum capacity, so we are looking for people to help foster some of the animals (esp. now). Many of the animals are housebroken, sweet, and family-friendly. They are often placed in the Shelter because their owners are no longer able to care for them. If you are interested, please email animal.shelter@monroetn.com or call the Shelter, 423-442-1015, and they will put you in touch with Cathy Barrett, Foster Coordinator.

The Monroe County Shelter has had a few personnel turn-overs; therefore, the Shelter is in desperate need of volunteers to walk the dogs and assist with other Shelter needs. If you are able to help, please call the Shelter.

Here are some tips
from the American Veterinary Medical Association
to help prepare your pets.:

  • Slowly introduce workday routines - Schedule waking up, feeding, and walking as you would for your expected workday routine.

  • Introduce a consistent departure schedule that builds on that routine.

  • Take anxiety out of your departure - Practice short departures on a daily basis, and gradually extend the time you are gone.

  • Give a small treat just as you walk out the door to condition your pet to find it rewarding for you to leave.

  • If signs of anxiety occur - such as destructive activity - don't punish your pet. Instead, shorten the time away and slowly build up to longer periods.

  • Exercise - Before leaving, engage in rigorous play or physical activity. Burning energy can help keep pets calm and relaxed for longer periods while you're gone.

  • Keep them engaged - Long-lasting treats, food puzzles, and automatic feeders can help keep pets occupied throughout the day.

  • Create a safe space - If you typically used a crate while you were gone during the day, but have stopped while at home, now is a good time to either explore discontinuing the crate (gradually increasing the length of time you're away) or reintroduce crating while still working from home. Do this by making it rewarding for your dog to go into the crate for short periods.

  • Turn on background noise - Leave on a TV, radio, or sound machine to provide some company while you're away.
