Off-Site Volunteer Opportunities!

We are looking for a new, creative writer or two to write/create the Dog Pet of the Week Article. This article goes out every other week to help show off the dogs available for adoption from the shelter. It is time sensitive as we need to meet the deadlines set by some of the newspapers that publish it. The article is about 500 words and a portion of it is boilerplate/pre-written. Training IS provided, knowledge of Constant Contact is a bonus. If you are interested, please contact Judy at 1catnut@gmail.com Thank you!

(2-3 Hours per Month)

Monroe County Friends of Animals (MCFA)/Spay Neuter Assistance for Pets (SNAP) is looking for volunteers for Spay/Neuter Voucher call-in sessions.

We hold monthly phone-in voucher sessions. People who need spay/neuter surgeries for their un-fixed pets (dogs and cats) and community cats call designated phone numbers. Volunteers call back and get the necessary personal and pet information to fill out the voucher forms. The sessions are held monthly, on a Saturday, and are 2-3 hours in length (includes setup/breakdown time). A cell phone is a necessary requirement, even better if you have a headset with your cell phone.

If you are interested and/or require more information please contact Dave at 423-595-4007 or dagalle@tds.net.

Spaying and neutering animals is the best way to take care of pets and to keep the intake of unwanted litters from filling up the shelter.

5 Super-Common Flea and Tick Myths And Why You've Got to Stop Believing Them
(from Chewy.com)

"Flea, Heartworm and Tick Season" is here! Oh, wait ... it NEVER stops in TN! Did you know that fleas are not only annoying but they can also be dangerous to your pet? Fleas are more than just insects that bite and suck your pet's blood. Yes, fleas can also transmit parasites to your pet including various worms! They are preventable!

The most common and annoying disease caused by fleas is flea allergy dermatitis. Some dogs and cats are allergic to the flea saliva and just one bite will cause them to be miserable. Dogs and cats with flea allergies will scratch resulting in hair loss and skin lesions, even from just one flea.

The best way to prevent all of these conditions is to prevent the fleas! There are many safe and effective preventative medications available from a veterinarian, for just this purpose. Many of the supermarket/discount store/over-the-counter “preventives” are not safe and can be very dangerous. It is best to purchase from your vet. Some products also include a Heartworm preventive. These preventative medications should be used every month in Tennessee-not just in the summer months!

MCFA

Heartworms are Preventable: We cannot stress enough how important Heartworm preventive is for ALL dogs and cats - Heartworms KILL our pets. Preventive is available from a Veterinarian ONLY - Never use any preventives purchased anyplace else (like a supermarket or a dollar store). Heartworm disease in cats is very different from heartworm disease in dogs. The cat is an atypical host for heartworms, and most worms in cats do not survive to the adult stage. Cats with adult heartworms typically have just one to three worms, and many cats affected by heartworms have no adult worms. While this means heartworm disease often goes undiagnosed in cats, even immature worms cause real, life threatening damage.

Too many of the dogs and cats that come into/surrendered to shelters are infected with heartworms. Please take care of your pets - get them tested and put them on a preventive - Please.

It IS PREVENTABLE!! Just DO IT!

Heartworm disease is a devastating disease that starts with a single mosquito bite.

Inmates are back for the moment, but can be pulled out at any time. This is a county-wide issue where inmates normally provide labor for county projects.

Assistance is always needed in the morning when the Shelter Staff is getting the shelter to open to the public. A few hours a day, a couple days a week will really help!!!
