Heartworms are Preventable: We cannot stress enough how important Heartworm preventive is for ALL dogs and cats - Heartworms KILL our pets. Preventive is available from a Veterinarian ONLY - Never use any preventives purchased anyplace else (like a supermarket or a dollar store). Heartworm disease in cats is very different from heartworm disease in dogs. The cat is an atypical host for heartworms, and most worms in cats do not survive to the adult stage. Cats with adult heartworms typically have just one to three worms, and many cats affected by heartworms have no adult worms. While this means heartworm disease often goes undiagnosed in cats, even immature worms cause real, life threatening damage.

Too many of the dogs and cats that come into/surrendered to shelters are infected with heartworms. Please take care of your pets - get them tested and put them on a preventive - Please.

It IS PREVENTABLE!! Just DO IT!

Heartworm disease is a devastating disease that starts with a single mosquito bite.

We need your help at the shelter! If you can help clean, feed, walk dogs and/or do laundry, please consider volunteering. Shelter Staff or other volunteers will be happy to train you.

Inmates are back for the moment, but can be pulled out at any time. This is a county-wide issue where inmates normally provide labor for county projects.

Assistance is always needed in the morning when the Shelter Staff is getting the shelter to open to the public. A few hours a day, a couple days a week will really help!!!

Shelter Needs:

  • Pedigree dog and puppy canned and dry food.
  • Friskies canned pate & shreds flavors (no fish), Purina One dry cat and kitten food and Fancy Feast canned & food (no fish).
  • Donations can be made at our website or checks mailed to MCFA, PO Box 106, Vonore, TN 37885.
  • All funds are used for animal care including veterinarian fees, food, bowls, cat litter and litter boxes, medications, testing, vaccinations, toys (enrichment) and flea and heart-worm preventives and treatment.
  • Please see our Chewy links at the top of this newsletter for more ways to donate & help.
  • Please click HERE for a Complete Needs List.
